Tiger Woods Came During The Pro-am At The Chevron World Challenge

Wednesday, December 8th, 2010

The first sign that something was different about Tiger Woods came during the pro-am at the Chevron World Challenge.

After getting the yardage to the green on the par-5 13th hole — 282 yards — he pulled a 3-wood from his bag and asked a small group standing behind him, “Can I get there with this?”

“Eventually,” came one reply.

Woods smiled, tried to disguise a friendly gesture by scratching the side of his leg, then set up over the shot and drilled it. The ball never left the flag, cleared the bunker and settled some 30 feet behind the green.

His caddie, Steve Williams, looked on with a straight face. Shots like that have been rare this year.

Several more followed. When it was suggested toward the end of his round that Woods was playing his best on Wednesday, Williams again answered solemnly, “He’s done a lot of work since Australia.”

It was like that all week at the Chevron World Challenge until Sunday, when it mattered.

Equipped with a four-shot lead, Woods missed three putts inside 6 feet and his lead narrowed to one. Then, he fell into some old swing habits under the pressure of contending on the back nine. It has been one year and 20 days since he felt those emotions, and that’s when he was susceptible to crumbling.

Woods found his game at the end, but it didn’t matter. Even after hitting an 8-iron as pure as can be to inside 3 feet for an easy birdie, Graeme McDowell denied him victory with a stunning end to a great year — he not only holed a 20-foot birdie putt to force a playoff, he then made a similar putt on the first extra hole to win.

For McDowell, everything is going his way — a feeling Woods used to know well.

He won the U.S. Open at Pebble Beach. He was the hero of the Ryder Cup for winning the final match for Europe. And he became the first player to beat Woods when trailing by at least three shots going into the final round.

No one else in 24 attempts managed to do that.

Hi,everyone! There are some new golf clubs in our store, for example: TaylorMade R9 Super Tri Driver , TaylorMade R9 460 Driver , Taylormade R7 CGB MAX Driver

“Obviously I didn’t know the stat,” McDowell said, moving into understatement mode. “But I was aware that he’s a pretty good player and a pretty damn good closer. So yeah, to be the guy to break that run is pretty special. I’m sure he’s disappointed. I’m definitely a guy who says that golf needs Tiger Woods, and we need him back winning tournaments.

“He’ll be back winning tournaments very soon.”

If he looked like the Woods of old, he sure didn’t sound like it moments after shaking McDowell’s hand on the 18th green.

“It was a great week, even though I didn’t win,” Woods said. “I’m proud of today, even though I lost.”

That sounded like something from the mouth of Phil Mickelson, the master of keeping golf in perspective. Woods was back to his old self a short time later when he got on Twitter and typed in, “Really hate losing, Graeme did what he needed to do to win and I didn’t.”

The Chevron World Challenge, for most players, marked the end of a long year.

For Woods, it seemed like the start of a new year.

Getting through November, when all of his personal troubles began last year, was a big deal for no other reason than he passed an important marker on the calendar.

Woods was asked about the last time he was really looking forward to a tournament because of how he was playing, and he again mentioned the Monday of the Ryder Cup, when he won his singles against Francesco Molinari by playing the last seven holes in 7 under.

There have been more hiccups since Celtic Manor, and perhaps more are to follow.

Woods began working with Sean Foley only about three months ago, and Williams is amazed how quickly he is picking up on the changes. Woods sounded as though he expected problems with his swing under the pressure of a back nine in the final group.

“I lost my swing in the middle part of the round, and pieced it back together again,” he said. “I was proud of that. I was very committed coming in, and hit some really, really good shots, which was good. If anything, I thought that’s when there might be a breakdown, but I was very pleased that I was able to put that back together then.

“Unfortunately, during the middle part of the round, I lost all those shots,” he said. “And Graeme was playing really well.”

McDowell saw enough to believe that better days are coming soon. The question is whether the aura of intimidation that Woods held for so long will return, too.

“There’s something a bit special about his golf game,” McDowell said, “and I fully expect that mystique to return as the golf clubs start doing the talking again.”

The clubs sound louder than a whisper, but not quite a shout, as Woods heads into an offseason in which he turns 35 and is in the midst of the longest drought of his career. He could not remember the last time he went an entire year without winning.

Woods most likely will return at Torrey Pines in the last week of January for the Farmers Insurance Open, a San Diego tournament he has won six times. That gives him almost two months to continue rehearsing a new swing, remembering what it was like to win.

Westwood Will Definitely Go Past Woods On October 31

Tuesday, October 12th, 2010

It was generally assumed British golf was in for a rare treat on Halloween with Lee Westwood deposing the great sorcerer himself, Tiger Woods, to become the first world No 1 this country has produced since Sir Nick Faldo in 1994.

Now it turns out it might be a trick. Westwood will definitely go past Woods on October 31.

But, if Martin Kaymer wins on that day in Spain to make it four victories on the bounce, the 25- year-old will go past both of them.

What another great week it will be for European golf, therefore, when the Andalucia Masters is played at Valderrama on October 28-31.

This used to be the venue to decide who will finish the season as Europe’s No 1. Now it will be the course to determine which of Europe’s two best players will be the world No 1.

Westwood is not due to play again until next month as he seeks to recover full fitness from his calf strain. But, following Kaymer’s dramatic ascent, the word is he is hoping to get the nod from physio Steve McGregor to play in Spain in what would be a true contest-within-a- contest against his Ryder Cup playing partner-turned-rival.

Hi,everyone! There are some new golf clubs in our store, for example: Nike VR Forged TW Blade Irons , taylormade r9 460 driver , Taylormade R9 Forged Irons

England versus Germany – that has a certain ring to it, doesn’t it? Whatever the outcome, Woods’s fateful decision this time last year to take his eye off the ball has proven an unwitting bonanza for the world rankings.

Monday morning used to dawn with a stifled yawn as Tiger added yet another week to his stretch as No 1 – for the record it will be a phenomenal 280 weeks in a row, and 622 in all, when this latest streak ends on October 31.

Now the top four are so close we could see it changing on an almost weekly basis for the foreseeable future.

Whichever of the two Europeans assumes the mantle will have a devil of a job to hold on to it for more than seven days.

The following week, Westwood, Kaymer, Woods and Phil Mickelson are due in China for the final event of the season, and all four would have an excellent chance of finishing the event in pole position.

This is usually the time of year when interest in the Royal and Ancient game wanes. But this contest pitting two Europeans against two Americans promises to be every bit as intriguing as the foursomes and fourballs matches at Celtic Manor.

The Ryder Cup Madness Took Over The World Of Golf Once-upon-a-time In 2009

Tuesday, October 5th, 2010

The Ryder Cup madness took over the world of golf once-upon-a-time in 2009, when the Ryder Cup captains were announced. Then the air became electric and the fans waited for a world-class golf anxiously from the 1st of October to the 3rd. They weren’t disappointed, but they also got a rain-torment therapy. After this year, although the Ryder game itself may not remembered for a long time, but the leaking suits, the 30 mm rain and the Tiger Woods defeat will stay in the news for a long time.

A New Low:

The Ryder Cup competition is usually scheduled to be played in the mid of September. This year however, the FedEx Cup slowed the Ryder Pace a bit. The crowd was seen holding umbrellas and running for cover as the play suspended at the Celtic Manor, Mcllory was seen with a very wet opening for the Fourball round which was all because the Americans wanted to play the all-lucrative FedEx Cup.

Tweets by Rory Mcllory that their suits are keeping them all-dried up, Public power naps by many golfers and then change in travel schedule by the masses for the delayed Mondays play is a new low in the world of golf.

A like-course-like-players scenario:

If we ignore the fact that Celtic Manor had God-knows-how-many-years to forecast the rain and game collision, we cannot ignore the fact that the team USA had a good 2 year period to select their rain gear.

Hi,everyone! There are some new golf clubs in our store, for example: callaway zazr irons , Titleist 909D Comp Driver , Taylormade Burner Superfast Rescue Hybrid

After full two years, the American team came up with suits that leaked and player bags that soaked moisture. After weeks of almost breathtaking rivalry and excitement, the event faced a complete washout. The washout witnessed the players appearing in a lavender gear first which hadn’t seemed acceptable neither by the rain nor the masses. The PGA of America then rushed its credit card transaction and bought 20 navy blue-suits for an approx £3,500. However, the story turned into ridicule when the American get-up thus purchased had a European crest sewn on their hearts instead of their own badges.

The soggy tale doesn’t finish here though, the Ryder Cup was scheduled to end on Sunday but failed to reach its goal. The rain delayed the game for a good 13 hours leading the game to end on Monday marking the rescheduling a whacked up attempt too.

Then a losing Woods:

On a serious note, for most of the die-hard Golf fans out there, it didn’t really matter if Tiger Woods appeared in a Lavender get up or that his caddie had been completely soaked to his skin, who later revealed that the golf bags were leaking too. What mattered to them was the 9 ½ score by the Europeans and the 6 ½ score by the American side at the end of the play along with Woods facing the worst loss ever.

He faced a complete blow out on Sunday and failed to display his top form in the first rounds either. Wood was teamed up with Steve Stricker who thankfully played well enough to achieve two wins at the match. They were playing against the European Luke Donald and Lee Westwood. The Donald-Westwood combo achieved a score of 5 and 6 to beat Woods team after the first match alternate at days six. The defeat was a good emotional uplift to the captain Colin Montgomerie who labelled Woods defeat as a “convincing loss”.

Montgomerie said that the Woods loss by a 6 and 5 isn’t just a loss, it’s a convincing loss and this is what helped them cross the day.

Ross Fisher and Miguel Angel Jimenez also held the front in their matches. Francesco Molinari was seen levelled with Woods after 9th hole, while his brother Edoardo Molinari led Rickie Fowler with one.

An Asheville Golf Course Being Designed By Tiger Woods Is Back In Construction Mode

Friday, September 24th, 2010

An Asheville, N.C., golf course, designed by Tiger Woods is back in construction mode after developers agreed to reduce the potential impact the course would have had on the local environment.

Construction on The Cliffs at High Carolina, a mountain course scheduled to open in the fall of 2012, has picked up again now that developers have dropped by nearly half the effect the course would have had on adjacent trout streams.

Holle, everybody! There are two pieces of golf news that you may be interested in. some callaway x24 irons reviews , x 22 irons VS x 24 irons , R9 Irons VS R9 TP Irons

A coalition of environmental groups had challenged permits issued by the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources, charging that the course would negatively impact trout streams without mitigation. Course developers slowed down the construction to address the issues, and cut the number of linear feet of impact from 3,132 to 1,665 by making the course shorter and by lengthening the walk between tees and greens.

The Cliffs will be Woods’ first American course, and, in a statement issued Thursday, he proclaimed himself pleased with the changes.

“High Carolina remains a truly amazing golf course,” Woods said. “I’m looking forward to getting back there to check on construction.”

Woods is scheduled to play on the United States’ Ryder Cup team next week in Wales.

Any One Of Those Five Players Can Win The FedEx Cup With A Victory

Tuesday, September 21st, 2010

Any one of those five players can win the FedEx Cup with a victory this week, regardless of what the others do.

Last year, Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods were the big winners. Mickelson closed with a five-under 65 to overtake Woods and win the Tour Championship, but Woods hung on to claim the FedEx Cup for the second time in three years. Woods failed to qualify for this year’s Tour Championship.

Kenny Perry led after three rounds last year, but stumbled to a four-over 74 in the final round to slide into a share of fourth place.

Stricker and Mickelson are two of the five players who have made the Tour Championship all four years of the playoffs. The other three players are Ernie Els, Jim Furyk and Hunter Mahan.

There were six multiple winners this year — Els, Stricker, Mahan, Justin Rose, Furyk and Johnson — and all are ranked in the top 15 on the FedEx Cup points list.

The field this week includes 10 players competing in the Tour Championship for the first time: Kuchar, Hoffman, Casey, Jason Day, Martin Laird, Ryan Palmer, Jeff Overton, Ryan Moore, Kevin Streelman and Bo Van Pelt.

Kuchar, who lives in Georgia and went to nearby Georgia Tech, will be the fan favorite this week. Not only does he top the FedEx Cup points list, Kuchar tops the money list and has collected 11 top-10 finishes in 24 starts.

The 32-year-old Kuchar is also one of the hottest players entering the event as he has top-10 finishes in four of his last five starts, including a win and a third-place finish.

Johnson, who stumbled in the final round of the U.S. Open and fell out of a playoff at the PGA Championship because of a final-hole penalty, is coming off a victory at the BMW Championship and has three top-nine finishes in his last four starts.

Golf Channel has five hours of coverage Thursday and Friday from 1-6 p.m. (et) then two hours of early coverage Saturday and Sunday. NBC has coverage from 12-3:30 p.m. Saturday, then 1:30-6 p.m. Sunday.

There are a pair of events next week on the PGA Tour.

Captain Corey Pavin and the U.S. team will look to retain the Ryder Cup at Celtic Manor, while the remainder of the tour will be in Mississippi for the Viking Classic. The tournament was postponed last year after the Madison area received over 20 inches of rain in the six weeks leading into tournament week. Will Mackenzie won the crown in 2008 and is considered the defending champion.

EUROPEAN TOUR

VIVENDI CUP, Golf de Joyenval (Retz and Marly courses), Paris, France – The Vivendi Cup has a new format this year after being contested as a team event last year.

Since 2000, the event was a biennial affair with teams from Great Britain & Ireland playing against a team from Continental Europe. This year, the event shifts to a 72-hole stroke play event with the first 36 holes featuring a pro- am.

Hi,everyone! There are some new golf clubs in our store, for example: TaylorMade R9 TP Irons , taylormade r9 driver , taylormade burner xd irons

The first two rounds will be contested on the Retz and Marly courses, while the Marly course will host the final two rounds.

Great Britain & Ireland won last year 16 1/2 – 11 1/2. It was the fifth straight victory for the GB&I team.

Golf Channel will start three hours of coverage at 8:30 a.m. (et) on Thursday and Friday. Saturday and Sunday’s action will be aired on tape delay starting at 12:00 p.m. and 1:30 p.m., respectively.

Celtic Manor will host the Ryder Cup next week as the U.S. team looks to defend its title. The European team has won the last three times the event was in Europe with the last U.S. win across the pond coming at The Belfry in 1993.

CHAMPIONS TOUR

SAS CHAMPIONSHIP, Prestonwood Country Club, Cary, North Carolina – Thanks to a 36-foot birdie putt on the final hole last year, Tom Pernice, Jr. walked off with a win in his first Champions Tour start.

He became the 15th player to win in his Champions Tour debut. Pernice’s final- hole birdie gave him a one-shot win over David Frost and Nick Price

Craig Stadler, who won eight times combined in the 2003 and 2004 seasons, is making his final start of the year as he is scheduled to undergo hip replacement surgery in the near future.

Pernice will have a hard time repeating as champion as the top two money winners this year — Bernhard Langer and Fred Couples — are both in the field along with 23 of the top 30 on the money list.

Bruce Lietzke won this title the first two years (2001, 2002) of the event, but there hasn’t been a repeat winner since.

The Champions Tour season is winding down as this is the 21st of 26 official events.

Golf Channel has tape delayed coverage starting at 6:30 p.m. (et) Friday and Saturday and at 7 p.m. Sunday.

The Champions Tour remains in North Carolina next week for the Ensure Classic at Rock Barn, where Jay Haas won last year.

NATIONWIDE TOUR

WNB GOLF CLASSIC, Midland Country Club, Midland, Texas – Garrett Willis held off Chad Collins to win this title last year.

The win for Willis was his second on the Nationwide Tour. He closed with a 68 to end at 20-under, one clear of Collins, who fired a 10-under 62 in the final round.

Willis has moved on to the PGA Tour, where he currently stands 98th on the money list. He made the cut in 15 of his 21 starts, but collected just one top-10 finish.

There will be four former winners in the field this week — Kevin Johnson (2000), D.J. Brigman (2003), Kris Cox (2005) and Brad Adamonis (2007). Johnson was the only one not to win at Midland Country Club, as he claimed his victory at the Club at Mission Dorado.

There is no television coverage this week.

There are just five more events left after this week. The first of the five will be the Soboba Classic, where Jerod Turner won last year.

UNITED STATES GOLF ASSOCIATION

U.S. MID-AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP, Atlantic Golf Club, Bridgehampton, New York – The men’s U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship tees off Saturday in New York.

Pittsburgh native Nathan Smith was a runaway winner last year. After back-to- back 1-up wins to reach the final, Smith routed Tim Spitz, 7 & 6 in the 36- hole final to win the Mid-Amateur for the second time. He also won in 2003.

The two stroke-play rounds will take place Saturday and Sunday, followed by four days of match play beginning on Monday. The 36-hole final is slated for Thursday, September 30th.

The biggest perk for the winner is a trip to the Masters next year.

U.S. WOMEN’S MID-AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP, Wichita Country Club, Wichita, Kansas – Martha Leach returns to defend her title this week at the U.S. Women’s Mid- Amateur Championship.

Last year, Leach either had a close match or an easy one. She claimed three 1- up wins en route to victory last year. Her next closest match was the final in which she beat Laura Coble, 3 & 2. Leach also recorded 5 & 4 and 6 & 5 wins in the earlier rounds.

Leach had competed in more than 40 USGA Championships and that was her first finals appearance.

Like the Men’s Mid-Am, play starts Saturday and runs to Thursday, September 30th. The only difference is the women’s final is only 18 holes.

Eight of the last nine winners are in the field this week, including two-time champion Meghan Stasi (2006, 2007). Only 2001 titlist Laura Shanahan is not competing at Wichita Country Club.

Tiger Woods Hasn’t Played The Tour Championship

Monday, September 20th, 2010

This won’t be the first year Tiger Woods hasn’t played the Tour Championship. It is, however, the first time he hasn’t played his way into the field.

Consider it just another in a long year of firsts for Woods, who has in all likelihood completed his first season as a professional without a victory.

But the absence of the world’s No. 1-ranked player, who has played a limited schedule because of globally discussed personal and physical issues, may be having less effect than expected on the success of individual tournaments. Officials at the Tour Championship expect life to go on this week at East Lake, even without the game’s biggest draw.

“We’re fortunate to have the No. 1 most-recognized athlete in the world in our sport,” said Todd Rhinehart, tournament director for the Tour Championship. “That draws people to the sport that might not normally be a golf fan. So from that perspective, he has impact.

“At the same time, we have the top 30 players for the whole season and who have played the best golf over the course of the last three weeks. It should only have a small impact for us.”

Rhinehart said tickets sales are ahead of last year’s pace and he expects to see the annual last-minute shopping spree that’s come to be the norm.

Although Woods won’t be at East Lake, where he won the inaugural FedExCup in 2007, the tournament has a field that’s loaded with accomplished players. There are six of the players ranked in the top 10 of the World Golf Rankings — 2009 Tour Championship winner Phil Mickelson, Steve Stricker, Jim Furyk, Paul Casey, Luke Donald and Matt Kuchar – and nine members of the U.S. Ryder Cup team. The field accounts for 24 victories on the PGA Tour.

“We may lose some fence-sitters,” Rhinehart said. “In some ways it will be interesting to see how the fans and media react. He didn’t play here in 2008 [when Woods was recovering from knee surgery] and now we’ve got 30 players who all have a mathematical chance to win the FedExCup. We have some great story lines.”

Hi,everyone! There are some new golf clubs in our store, for example: xxio mp600 irons , Callaway X-24 Hot Irons , Callaway X-22 Irons

Still, not having Woods at the Tour Championship does seem weird.

“Absolutely it will,” said Mickelson at the BMW Championship after learning the news.

The Tiger Effect hasn’t really dragged the Tour down this year, as some projected. TV ratings aren’t as high, but PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem said earlier this year that the ratings were acceptable.

“Everybody needs to understand that when Tiger Woods plays and he’s in the hunt on the weekend, he spikes the ratings. That’s true,” Finchem said in March. “When he doesn’t play, we have very acceptable ratings from a sponsor-value standpoint and from an audience-reach standpoint.”

Woods’ troubles haven’t extended to the sponsors. Despite the stagnant economy, the PGA Tour has managed to find replacements for tournament sponsors who have dropped out. Farmers Insurance came forward to underwrite the event at Torrey Pines. Wells Fargo decided to officially put its name on the event in Charlotte. Smith & Nephew signed on in Memphis and most recently, Nationwide said it would be the presenting sponsor for the Memorial Tournament.

The players understand the importance of having Woods return to his old ways, too. In 1996, the year before Woods became a full-time player on the Tour, Tom Lehman was the No. 1 money-winner with $1.78 million. That figure has nearly quintupled since then, largely because of the impact of Woods.

“Obviously you always want Tiger to play well,” said Charley Hoffman, who comes to East Lake ranked third in FedExCup points. “It’s great for the game and brings people out to the course. You want to beat him, but you want him to play well, too, for our sport. Because he definitely brings media, people, fans out here and does a great job promoting the game of golf.”

Woods said his game is getting closer. After looking lost at the WGC Bridgestone six weeks ago, he played well at the PGA Championship and came close to qualifying for the Tour Championship, despite starting in 112th place. Woods is currently working with a new swing coach, Sean Foley, to get ready for the Ryder Cup.

“I didn’t play well in the beginning of the year and I didn’t play well in the middle of the year and I’m starting to play well now,” Woods said at the BMW Championship. “I’m headed in the right direction, which is good, a lot of good signs, and I just need to keep working and stay the course.”

Mickelson, who played with Woods during the final round at the BMW Championship, agreed.

“I think his game is inches from being there,” Mickelson said.

Tiger Woods Is In Danger Of Losing No. 1 Ranking

Tuesday, September 7th, 2010

Tiger Woods is in danger of losing his five-year grip on golf’s world No. 1 ranking to Phil Mickelson or Steve Stricker this week.

Woods fired a two-under-par 69 on Sunday to share 23rd place and trail leader Jason Day of Australia by 10 strokes after 54 holes at the Deutsche Bank Championship.

The possibility of Woods losing his top spot comes just two weeks after his divorce from Elin Nordegren and in the wake of the sex scandal that destroyed his iconic image.

“I played better than what my score indicated,” Woods said of the third round.

“I had many putts that I didn’t make. I had a couple of nice par putts but, boy, I missed many birdie putts.”

Hi,everyone! There are some new golf clubs in our store, for example: callaway x22 irons for sale , Nike vr fairway wood , Taylormade R9 Forged Irons

Should either fourth-ranked Stricker or second-ranked Mickelson win the Deutsche Bank crown, and if Woods finishes far enough at the back, the 14-time Major champion’s 273-week reign atop the rankings would be over.

Defending Deutsche Bank champion Stricker stood fourth on 200, four strokes behind Day and one stroke ahead of Mickelson. Both Stricker and Mickelson shot 67s in their third rounds to put themselves in prime position for the finish they would need to overtake Woods.

Stricker, who has now played 72 holes in a row without a bogey, will worry only about winning, and let the rankings take care of themselves.

“It’s always hard to win,” he said. “I’m just going to have to go out and do my best and try to get in position the last few holes and see if I can get a chance at it.”

That means the best golfers in the world will be in town. Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Ernie Els and Jim Furyk will all be among those teeing off at TPC Boston.

And while the tournament may be taking place at TPC Boston, the course isn’t actually in Boston, but on the outskirts of the city. Which Massachusetts town will be the PGA Tour be heading to this weekend for the Deustche Bank Championship?

Tiger Woods Finally Looked Like The No. 1 Player In The World Thursday

Friday, August 27th, 2010

In his first tournament since his divorce, Tiger Woods finally looked like the No. 1 player in the world Thursday at the Barclays when he opened with a 6-under 65, his lowest score of the year, to share the lead with Vaughn Taylor.

It was his first time leading after any round on the PGA Tour since the Tour Championship last September.

Woods and Taylor both played in the morning, when the greens were smooth and the conditions were only breezy. They had a one-shot lead over Adam Scott, Brian Gay and Ryan Palmer. Scott played in the afternoon, where a gust of wind played tricks on him at the final hole and led to bogey.

The last time Woods’ was atop the leaderboard after any round of any tournament was when he won the Australian Masters on Nov. 15, less than two weeks after his life caved in on him — the car crash after Thanksgiving night, details of adultery, five months away from the game and a broken marriage, which officially ended Monday.

Hi,everyone! There are some new golf clubs in our store, for example: Nike VR Forged TW Blade Irons , Mizuno JPX AD Irons , taylormade r9 driver

Palmer had a chance to join the leaders until a three-putt bogey on the 18th put him at 66. Even though the greens became bumpy in the afternoon after so much foot traffic, the course was soft enough to allow for good scores. There were 14 players who shot 67, including Davis Love III, defending champion Heath Slocum and Stewart Cink.

Phil Mickelson, with his ninth chance in the last four months to replace Woods at No. 1 in the world, made only one birdie for a 72.

LPGA

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) — Michelle Wie has had the second hole-in-one of her professional career on the way to a 7-under 65 and a three-shot lead after the first round of the CN Canadian Women’s Open.

The 6-foot-tall Wie says she’s notched eight holes-in-one in her career, but only one other as a pro, in her rookie season at last year’s LPGA Championship. This on came on the 190-yard, par-3 11th hole.

Sarah Kemp of Australia was three strokes back of Wie after her morning-round 68, while defending champion Suzann Pettersen was in third place with a 69.

Rookie Ilhee Lee of South Korea initially had a score of 69, but it was later corrected to 70 — a mark shared by a group of players.

US Amateur

UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. (AP) — Reigning NCAA champ Scott Langley needed extra holes for a second straight day to advance to the round of 16 at the U.S. Amateur.

Langley beat Augusta State’s Patrick Reed in 19 holes morning at breezy Chambers Bay. A day earlier, Langley knocked off Tim Jackson in 19 holes in the first round of match play.

The round of 16 was being contested later Thursday afternoon.

Other winners in the morning matches included defending champ Byeong-Hun An (4 and 3), David Chung (4 and 3) and Morgan Hoffmann (6 and 4). Only four of the 16 matches even made it to No. 18, with two of them — Langley and Scott Strohmeyer’s win over Justin Thomas — going to extra holes.

European Tour

GLENEAGLES, Scotland (AP) — Richard Finch of England shot a 6-under 66 to lead the Johnnie Walker Championship after the opening round.

Finch is looking to end a two-year drought since winning twice in 2008, at the New Zealand Open and Irish Open.

Five players are a shot back. The English quartet of Robert Rock, Richard Bland, Gary Boyd and David Lynne, and Scotland’s Stephen Gallacher.

England’s Simon Dyson is at 4 under and a chance of breaking into the leading nine on the Ryder Cup points standings.

Dyson arrived in Scotland in 13th place in the standings and four places short of automatically qualifying. However, he needs to win to have any chance of making the European team.

Golf Star Tiger Woods Returns To Competition

Wednesday, August 25th, 2010

Golf star Tiger Woods returns to competition and looks to regain his stature in the PGA Tour this week at the Barclay’s tournament, his first after being divorced with his wife after six years of marriage.

Woods has recently signed his divorce papers with former wife Elin Nordegren, and he now sets his focus to improve his faltering golf game.

He has played badly and not won a tournament since returning to golf four months ago at The Masters, following a sex scandal involving a number of women.

Hi,everyone! There are some new golf clubs in our store, for example: cleveland cg7 irons , Taylormade R9 Forged Irons , callaway x22 irons for sale

Woods is trying to improve and advance towards the PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup playoffs and a chance to earn a berth in the American Ryder Cup team.

There are some who say that his inclusion at the Ryder Cup would just be a distraction.

“Turning up at Celtic Manor could be one of the hardest things Tiger ever does,” said Colin Montgomery, European Ryder Cup team captain, in a newspaper article a few months ago.

“He will worry about how the wives of the other players will react to him. Some of them will be friends with Elin and they will sympathize with her anger and pain. Some of them might find it hard to welcome Tiger back into the group,” Montgomery wrote.

Woods delivered the worst performance of his storied career earlier this month at the Bridgestone Invitational, where he finished second last in a tie for 78. He had won the tournament seven times, but he went 18 over par and finished 30 shots behind eventual winner Hunter Mahan.
