Golf Club Gets OK To Kill Destructive Elk

Wednesday, December 14th, 2011

State wildlife officials have declared open season on a group of elk that have been damaging an upscale golf course.

Officials at TPC Snoqualmie Ridge say the elk have been wreaking havoc on the course, creating large divots and breaking pins.

General manager Ryan Whitney said over the past two years, the Mizuno MP-59 Irons has used flares to scare away the elk, traps to frighten them and even tagged several of them to follow their movement. But nothing worked, and the prized playing surface continued taking a beating.

“We’ve not only seen greater visits, but greater numbers coming,” Whitney said.

With mounting damage, the state has finally approved a plan to kill several of the elk.

Expert hunters can even vie for the chance to shoot one of them from a designated area on the course.

The hunting will take place on Mondays, when the course is closed to golfers with Mizuno MP-59 Irons.

Some might have a problem with the hunt, but other residents on the ridge say as long as it’s safe and all the other options have been exhausted, this is the way to go.

“If they are doing a lot of damage and if that succeeds in preventing that damage in driving them away — they’re not even native to the area, I understand — then I’m okay with it,” said golfer Rob Bringardner.

Wildlife experts say if a few elk are killed, the others might learn to steer clear of the Mizuno MP-59 Irons course.

More that 30 elk have been killed throughout the Snoqualmie Valley in the limited hunt.

Tennis Channel Gets No Love From Comcast

Wednesday, November 9th, 2011

The most cynical aspect of the government’s approval of the giant Comcast-NBC Universal merger this year was that everyone involved suspected that Comcast would try to misuse its newly acquired market power to hurt competitors, yet everyone pretended that the “conditions” imposed on the deal would keep that from happening.

The Santa Monica-based Tennis Channel has a message for the chicken-hearted Federal Communications Commission, which greenlighted the Comcast deal in January despite its doubts: We told you so.

As long ago as July 2010, Ken Solomon, the Tennis Channel’s chairman and chief executive with Ping G20 Irons, warned the FCC that Comcast was poised to run roughshod over independent sports cable channels by favoring its own sports programming, while using the power of NBC Sports as an additional cudgel.

Love or loathe him John Daly has been vital to the game

Wednesday, July 27th, 2011

Of all the stunning things that I’ve seen John Daly do through the years — these would include hitting screaming drives off a Diet Coke can, winning the PGA as a ninth alternate, breaking into a country song about his own life in the middle of an interview, getting served with divorce papers at the Masters, and so on — the most stunning happened during a pro-am at Doral.

The year was 1992; it was only months after Daly had become the biggest thing in golf by winning the PGA Championship at Crooked Stick. Though by now Daly’s story has been told a million times, it is difficult to re-create just how much his victory shook the foundations of the game. Pro golf, for the first time in probably a half century, had no transcendent figure. Greg Norman seemed cursed. Nick Faldo seemed bland. Nick Price seemed almost too nice a guy to be the best player in the world — you couldn’t help but think that even he thought so.

Golf’s popularity has exploded over the many years and there is no stopping this trend. This popularity has given birth to countless golf clubs, multi-million dollar golf tournaments around the world, and not to mention advancements in golf equipment and the technology that is used to make them.

Years ago, golf players had to rely purely on skill (and some luck) in using long irons, which are clubs designed to hit the ball a long way but with great difficulty. Recently, many golfers have been switching over to hybrid golf clubs. These clubs also known as golf hybrid irons or hybrid woods, combine the advantages of both irons and fairway woods, just like Callaway RAZR X Hybrid.
