Callaway X22 Irons Reviews

Specs
Callaway X-22 irons boast stainless-steel heads, modified cavity backs and a revamped version of Callaway's bore-through hosel. Each club is cut with the company's Precision Notch Weighting (heel and toe weights), which balances center of gravity and kick-point. The X-22 series consists of a, game-improvement design and a more streamlined Tour model for advanced players. Each model (3-iron through pitching wedge) is available in True Temper steel or Callaway graphite shafts with standard flexes.
Bottom Line
For performance, control and forgiveness, X-22s are superb clubs. Both models are versatile and live up to their claims. Although a wedge package (gap wedge to lob wedge) from Cleveland or Titleist is a better choice (and common), X-22 irons are at the top of the premium club heap.

While the Callaway X-22s I tried are stuffed with new ideas, some the familiar technologies, such as the variable thickness face and the distinctive S2H2 hosel, remain. And in keeping with the high-tech approach, the Tru-Bore tip is now made of polycarbonate to help reduce vibration through the shaft.
The appearance is high-quality, too, with the notches on the sole reinforcing the suggestion of power and stability. The Callaway X-series of irons have always been about high-quality product and the 2009 line-up is no exception. In addition to the standard set, a Tour version also exists with a sleeker hosel, a thinner topline and progressively narrower soles that offer the best players a higher degree of flexibility.

Notable Differentiators
By pushing weight to the perimeter of the club head, they have increased the moment of inertia (MOI) by 10% over their older siblings. This simple, seemingly innocent change provides you with the highest level of forgiveness ever in an X-Series iron. Perfect for those off-center hits we are all too familiar with. Paired with their Variable Face Thickness (VFT) technology, Callaway has managed to squeeze in more distance and forgiveness on off-center shots than ever before.
Bottom Line
While most tour professionals prefer the workability of forged irons, PGA Tour Pro Rocco Mediate nearly outlasted Tiger Woods in the 2008 U.S. Open at Torrey Pines playing Callaway X-22 irons. If the X-22 can get Rocco within a stroke of beating Tiger, they certainly have a place in the bag of the casual golfer.

Design and Tech Benefits
A progression from the Callaway X-20 irons, the Callaway X-22 irons have repositioned weighting for improved forgiveness. The sole and top line have been made thinner without reducing the size of the hitting area. After the success of last year’s X-Forged, Callaway have worked with their tour players to create a refined set. The thin top line and narrow sole remain, while the extra bounce has been added. The long irons are slightly heavier to help produce a more penetrating flight.
Verdict
The top edge in the Callaway X-22 irons has been made thinner but is in no way intimidating and, as ever, the ball seems to spring off the face. While the Callaway X-Forged are Callaway's best ever looking set at address, the styling of the new cavity did not work quite as well as last year's model. The compact heads do offer enough forgiveness to attract more than just pro golfers.
